Arethia´s origins date back to 1954, when Alfred N. Hertz founded a a small but ambitious flavour company, Alfred N. Hertz GmbH to support his clients with tailor-made taste solutions

Over the years, the company expanding internationally and set its focus on highly regulated product applications and specialties. The strategic commitment to quality and innovation earned the company a loyal customer base and propelled its growth.

Alfred N. Hertz founded the Alfred N. Hertz GmbH, to support his clients with tailor-made taste solutions. With its dedication and passion to develop products with signature tastes he quickly established himself as a trusted name in the industry.


Christian G. Hertz joined the company and expanded the business to a new level, establishing it as a leading supplier to market leaders in its segments. The company expanded its operation internationally and become a true global player in the early times of globalization.


To accommodate further growth, the company inaugurated its new headquarter in 1998 and its second manufacturing facility in Reinbek, Hamburg in 2000 to expand its capacity and capabilities.


In 2013, Philipp N. Hertz joined the company as the third generation. In 2014 he founded FLAVORIQ to diversify the business and support the upcoming product developments for new generation products.


In the coming years the group also expanded its operational footprint internationally with a first Sales & Innovation Centre in Dubai in 2014 for new generation inhalation products and the first international production facility in Surabaya, Indonesia in 2019.


In 2023, the group restructured under the new holding, branded as Arethia, with Hertz Flavors, and FLAVORIQ operating as product divisions focusing on their specific end markets in the Inhalation and Functional additive space. The concept was simple: concentration of knowledge and resources, while maintaining clear focus and dedication to the specific end markets.

In parallel, the group expanded its activities by adding Senovia as a new brand product division to service the Food & Beverage industry. In late 2023, the new centre of excellence for the development of flavours for food and beverage applications was open in Zurich, Switzerland, focusing on the specific needs and requirements of the various applications in this industries. Simultaneously, a new innovation centre in Dubai was inaugurated, preparing the path for a soft opening in the same year.
